Continental shelf
Refers to the seabed and submerged soil of the submarine area beyond a coastal State's landmass up to a distance prescribed by law. Under the U.N. Convention of the Law of the Sea, the coastal State has sovereign rights over this area for exploration and exploitation of natural resources.
