Also called a data field. A placeholder for a set of one or more adjacent characters comprising a unit of information in a database, forming one of the searchable items in that database. It is a portion of a structured record, especially a machine-readable record, containing a particular category of information (for example, term and scope note would be fields included in a vocabulary record).
