authority file
Also called simply an authority. A file, typically electronic, that serves as a source of standardized forms of names, terms, titles, etc. Authority files should include references or links from variant forms to preferred forms. The main purpose of an authority is to enforce usage, often requiring users to use only the preferred term for a given concept. Any type of vocabulary can be used as an authority.
