brown algae

brown algae
A division of algae, mostly marine and benthic, which are common in the intertidal zone. Phaeophyta contain a brown pigment (fucoxanthin) which masks the chlorophyll and other pigments present, giving the plant a brown to olive green colour. Brown seaweeds are used as manure and fodder in some coastal districts, and a few species are edible for humans.
