Academic Discourse

Academic Discourse
Presentation of ideas (usually in written form) in academic or scholarly contexts that exhibits conventional characteristics in form and expression. Traditionally, such communication has been objective, analytical, and expository, and has generally advanced an argument for a particular thesis. Can also refer to conventions of discourse followed within individual scholarly disciplines and is often addressed in writing instruction for college or high school students. May be used for academic classroom discourse in K-12, especially as it pertains to second language learning. Note: Do not confuse with "English for Academic Purposes," which involves English instruction for non-English speakers. From 2000-2019, "Academic Discourse" was used in indexing.
