The Missions and Projects Facet lists NASA missions and
projects (as in launched experiements, not missions as in
organizational directorates). It has been derived from
multiple sources of information. The principal sources were
the 1.0 version of the NASA Missions and Projects
vocabulary, and the websites of the various missions and
NASA centers. This facet is largely an authority list of
mission and project names and acronyms. A small amount of
categorization of the missions and projects ahs been
performed, based on the location of the mission/project, or
the location of the object of its study. For example, the
Hubble Space Telescope is in Earth orbit, but its purpose
is to study deep space phenomena. Therefore it is
categorized as a Deep Space and Science Mission.
Missions are also categorized by whether the mission had a
crew or not. Large families of missions, such as the
Shuttle, Apollo, and Explorer missions also have been made
into categories.
The categorization of past, current, future, and potential
missions which was in the 1.0 version of the facet has been
removed due to the frequency of changes as missions are in
planning stages.
