associative blocking

associative blocking
Mechanism invoked to explain the interference phenomenon in memory. It is based on the idea of competition between memory traces. A cue fails to recover a memory because it is more strongly associated with another memory.
McGeoch, J. A. (1942). The psychology of human learning: An introduction. New York: Longmans.
