complementary learning systems
Theory that the formation and consolidation of memories are based on two interactive complementary systems. One, in the hippocampus, would be responsible for the rapid acquisition of episodic memories, distinct from each other, and dependent on context. The other, in the neocortex, would be responsible for the slow and gradual acquisition of the overlapping structure of events, independent of context.
