Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation

Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation
The Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation is located in northeastern Utah. It is the homeland of the Northern Ute Tribe, and is the largest of three Indian reservations inhabited by members of the Ute Tribe of Native Americans. It lies in parts of seven counties; in descending order of land area they are: Uintah, Duchesne, Wasatch, Grand, Carbon, Utah, and Emery counties.
In 1861 this two million acre reservation was established for the Ute Indian settlement in Utah Territory by U.S. President Abraham Lincoln. In 1864 Congress created the Uintah Valley Reservation “for the permanent settlement and exclusive occupation of” Native Americans. On January 5, 1882 President Chester Arthur created by executive order the 2 million-acre Uncompahgre Reservation for Utes evicted from Colorado. During the 1880s, federal policy changed requiring parcels to be given to individual Indians rather than having them live on communally held land. In 1894 Congress passed the General Allotment Act, returning “unalloted” lands to the public domain. A land cession in 1900 created the Umcompahgre Reserve. A law passed in 1902 by Congress provided 80 acres to each head of household and 40 acres to each additional member. Unalloted lands on the reservation would revert to public domain for non-Indian settlement subject to the Homestead Act. In 1905 President Theodore Roosevelt signed a proclamation opening about 400,000 acres of the reservation to white settlement. In 1948 Congress expanded what was left of the Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation, adding back the Hill Creek region (the Hill Creek Extension) of the old Uncompahgre Reservation.
