U.S. Utah Commission

U.S. Utah Commission
The Utah Commission was created in 1882 under the Edmunds Law , a law enacted by the U.S. Congress to define punishment for polygamy and unlawful cohabitation in the territories. The Commission submitted regular annual reports to the Secretary of the Interior from 1882-1896 as well as interim reports in 1882 and 1884. The Secretary of the Interior subsequently transmitted the reports to Congress. Reports reviewed the commission's work and accomplishments for the previous year and made recommendations for additional measures commissioners believed should be enacted for the solution of the Utah problem.
The Utah Commission was established by Congress through enactment of the Edmunds Act on 22 March 1882. The five-member commission whose members were appointed by the President of the United States was charged to develop, administer, and enforce the election provisions of the law to abolish the practice of polygamy. The commission operated for fourteen years dissolving only when Utah became a state in 1896.
