Utah Clean Diesel Trucking
In December 2009, the Division of Air Quality submitted a grant proposal for $2.9 million to the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) National Clean Diesel Campaign. The proposal included a diverse group of projects that would reduce diesel emissions and fuel usage from diesel-powered, long-haul trucks that travel and idle within the non-attainment areas of the Wasatch Front.

Between December and April, the UDAQ began diesel-emission-reduction projects through the State Clean Diesel Grant Program that included the installation of APUs (Auxiliary Power Units) on 48 long-haul tractors.

The Initiative was formally announced by Governor Gary R. Herbert on 6 April 2010 and was funded by a State allocation of $352,941 through EPA's National Clean Diesel Campaign and a State match of $235,294, for a total of $588,235. Those grants will help 15 trucking businesses install anti-idling devices in long-haul trucks. These devices, Auxiliary Power Units (APU), are intended to reduce fuel consumption and prevent the release of harmful air emissions. The funding is made possible with a matching grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Diesel Grant and DEQ’s Division of Air Quality.
